1st Round EFL Cup win - just!

After giving away two silly late goals in our friendly game against Oxford United on 1st September that worried me greatly about the season to come, our first competitive game at the new Brentford Community Stadium was against newly promoted to the Championship Wycombe Wanderers on Sunday 6th September in the EFL Cup - 1st Round South. We fielded a weakened team as a number of players were on international duty and some being rested because of transfer speculation. They were probably the better team in the first half and their high pressing caused us a lot of problems. Against the run of play Pinnock scored with a fine set piece header from a free kick in the 32nd minute. We dominated the second half as they were reduced to 10-men soon after the break. Yet they equalised in the 76th minute. The game finished 1-1 and went to penalties that we won 4-2. During the very short break we signed centre back Charlie Goode from Northampton and centre forward and EFL League 1 Player of last season Ivan Toney from Peterborough. We have let Julian Jeanvier and Luka Racic go out on loan. There is still much speculation about Ollie Watkins (who is likely to go to Aston Villa as Callum Wilson is set to go to Newcastle from Bournemouth), Said Benrahma (who would excite all my Villa friends if he went there but I feel he needs to go to a club that is unlikely to be in a relegation dogfight for most of the season), David Raya (rumour is that Arsenal are after him) and Rico Henry (who Leicester City want but they have only just signed a full back). The first Championship game is away at Birmingham City next Saturday lunchtime and I would have been there in the pre-COVID-19 era.
