Last game of the season and an opportunity to impress, but more of a damp squibb

Updated: May 27, 2022

At home for the last game of an amazing Premier League debut season. This was our chance to attack lowly Leeds who needed points to avoid relegation. For about the first 30 mins we sat back and Leeds had a goal disallowed for offside probably by only a few cm. We did have a few chances later in the half but Mbeumo did not have his shooting boots on today (similar for the second half). Nil-nil at half-time and then a very poor clearance by Raya in the 56th minute ended up with him giving away a penalty that they scored from. Then we made 3 substitutions in the 58th, 62nd and 70th minutes. Shortly afterwards Ajer went off injured and we were down to 10-men. In the 78th minute a cross from Wissa finds an unmarked Canos whose looping header gets us the equaliser. He runs off to celebrate and ends up with a booking, Two minutes later he makes a stupid tackle and gets a second booking and is sent off (at least he can say he scored our first and last Premier League goals); now down to 9-men. We hold out until the 94th minute when Leeds get the winner (remember, they got the equaliser in the 95th minute at Elland Road) and the game ends up as a 1-2 defeat. Their fans go mad as they stay up and I feel a little bit let down. We should have attacked them from the beginning as a way of thanking the fans. I mustn’t let that overshadow a fantastic season that I shall never forget. I wish now I had bought the Bees coffee mug that stated ‘We are Premier League’ but I had assumed that I would only be able to use it for one season. Ye of little faith, I hear you say. You're right of course - I’m a Brentford supporter!
