Goals from a great Cherki first-half strike and a Savinho second-half deflection consign The Bees to a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the pouring rain at the Etihad Stadium. We exit the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage and head coach Keith Andrews stated: "We played with a lot of courage". Well, we certainly played better than against Leeds even without Henderson, Thiago and Ouattara (AFCON) who were all not in the squad. In the first half, Jensen had a good free kick saved by Trafford after Schade was pulled down just outside the area (debate whether the yellow card should have been a red). In the 32nd minute City got a corner that was headed out by Schade and Cherki smashed it home from the edge of the box. We made a bright start to the second half. After a spell of possession in City’s half, Jensen played the ball to Ajer and his powerful strike from 25 yards was parried by Trafford. Moments later, Kayode skipped past O'Reilly on his way into the area and tested Trafford with a low shot from a tight angle. On 64 minutes, Valdimarsson dived to his left to deny Foden after the forward had plucked the ball out of the air and taken aim for the bottom corner. But there was nothing Brentford’s keeper could do to prevent City from doubling their advantage three minutes later. The home side broke quickly following a Bees free-kick, and Reijnders released Savinho down the left. The winger drove inside and saw his shot loop over Valdimarsson and into the net via Ajer’s outstretched leg.
On Saturday we are away to Wolves, the only team not to win this season. Much as I would like 3 points I have a gut feeling that Wolves will win and push us firmly towards the relegation zone. I'll be there as my digital ticket has just arrived.
