We must win our home matches against teams who are unlikely to get into the top half of the table. Wolves, who have had very poor start to the season with no victories were even more desperate to get the points. Also, could we break our own world record by scoring inside the first minute in four consecutive matches? No, but almost as Collins headed us in front in the second minute from a Damsgaard cross. Seconds after the restart, Mbeumo hung up a cross to the back post, which was met by Lewis-Potter, but their keeper, Johnstone scrambled across his line to push the header to safety. Wolves then levelled in the 4th minute. After that van den Berg and Nørgaard had efforts blocked, while they had a shot from 20 yards that cleared the crossbar, to conclude a frantic opening 10 minutes. On 17 minutes, as a corner was swung in from the right, Collins was dragged down just outside the six-yard box. The Ref allowed play to continue but the game was eventually paused, and the Bees were awarded a penalty after a VAR check. Mbeumo rolled the ball into the bottom corner, sending the keeper the wrong way. Wolves went in search of an equaliser and had a couple of long-distance efforts. However, they were not to be denied, and in the 26th minute from a Collins’ loose pass (memories of the game here last season) it allowed them to make it 2-2. We re-took the lead two minutes later. Mbeumo found Janelt with a lofted pass who teed up Nørgaard to score with a close-range finish. Then we had another couple of efforts from Schade and Pinnock. In the second minute of stoppage time Pinnock extended our lead when he headed home after Damsgaard picked him out with a perfect delivery. Half time Bees 4 Wolves 2.
Ten minutes after the restart, Janelt beat Gomes with a superb piece of skill and switched to Mbeumo on the right. He worked the ball inside to Nørgaard, who strode towards the edge of the box and let fly. Johnstone parried his effort and then leapt to his feet to save Janelt’s attempt on the rebound. Janelt then burst into space, latched on to Lewis-Potter’s perfectly weighted pass and his driven cross from the left narrowly evaded a queue of Bees players inside the six-yard box. This led to a couple of corners.
Flekken was called into making a good save before Schade was released beyond the Wolves backline by the outstanding Damsgaard, but Johnstone darted off his line to deny the forward. Then both sides traded chances with van den Berg and Mebeumo going close. There was still time for two more goals at the Gtech. In the 90th minute, Johnstone got his fingertips to Lewis-Potter’s low cross from the left, but substitute Carvalho was perfectly placed to bundle over the line from close range. In the third minute of stoppage time, they got their third (but Flekken should have easily saved it) and in the final seconds we had one last chance that dropped just the wrong side of the post. We ended up winning 5-3 but the three points are more important than the score.
